How can standards help the construction industry to achieve a greener and sustainable future?

One of the biggest challenges ahead for the construction industry stakeholders is how to access and share accurate information about the construction products during their lifetime. I’m happy to join this event and talk about how to do this with the help of the standards without reinventing the wheel.

Retrofit still remains a mystery to many, yet its potential is boundless—achievable only through zero upfront costs.

Customers still do not know what retrofit is, they do not understand the benefits and unless we reduce and remove the upfront costs it will not be able to deliver its true potential which Is essential for net zero targets

Resi Speaker – Mark Hood
As the Head of Architecture at Resi Design, Mark has chaperoned the company as they scale to new heights delivering 140 new projects per month with his team of 40 Architects, Technologists and Consultants.

He is spearheading innovation at the Resi focusing on net-zero carbon emissions through retrofitting and SIPs. His leadership has been pivotal in steering Resi towards setting new benchmarks in eco-friendly, scalable residential extensions.

Heat Geek Speaker – Matt Lipton
Matt Lipson builds partnerships that decarbonise home energy at nation scale. He has spent 20 years designing and delivering low carbon products and services. That includes working with every major energy player. Now he works at Heat Geek, a climate tech start up. They offer home upgrades that save people money every month. It works by connecting homeowners with elite heat pump installers and lenders. For instance, their partnership with OVO halves the costs of running a heat pump. Matt believes we can create a great, carbon free future by working together.

Increasing Construction's Diversity of Thought (panel debate)

How do we promote inclusivity and diversity across the construction industry?

What are the barriers built by senior leadership who aren’t the people who will inherit the industry?

How can we bring newcomers to the industry, the people whos future depends on the decisions we make today.

Join this amazing debate.

Wates Speaker – Lydia McGuinness
Lydia McGuinness, a Site Manager at Wates Construction for the Canada Water Development, also serves as the Construction Leadership Council Young Ambassador, showcasing a strong commitment to diversity in construction. As the former Chair of Generation for Change Yorkshire for three years and now the National Chair, she champions industry initiatives, particularly focused on women in construction, aiming to highlight career growth opportunities and the sector’s societal impact.

Thomas Sinden Speaker – Owen Jackson
Owen is the sustainability lead for Thomas Sinden Ltd., an SME main contractor working in the UK. Originally coming from a background in Marine Biology and Ecology, his first two and half years in the industry have been truly an education is how we reached the point we are today, and why it is so vital that we make our way back to the path of sustainable development within our planetary and societal boundaries.

In strong support of these feelings, Owen has worked with ZERO and especially its younger members since its early inception and is proud to help lead one of the playbook pillars on Construction. Low hanging fruit - how much carbon can we save just by being more productive?

We do amazing things in construction. The world around us will most likely last belong our ifetimes but with that comes a HUGE responsibility to create better. Construction hasn’t changed much and we can see that by the lack of productivity, even with BIM it hasn’t changed much. We waste an amazing amount of materials, time and money in our industry, this all has a carbon cost. So what is the low hanging fruit and what can we do easily?
In this session Matthew with give the lie of the land and so simple things to make BIG impacts.

How can circularity help us reduce emissions, with half the effort?

Immerse yourself in the dynamic topic of circularity, what we mean by this and how it can be the key to achieving the industry’s ambitions to achieve Net Zero. With some real life examples to be shared, join us in discussing how the circular economy can transform the way we design and build, both today and in the future.

Challenging People - Challenging ourselves and others to change our attitudes and practices to decarbonise the construction sector

My name is Becky Lashley. I’m a senior lecturer at the School of Architecture and the Environment at University of the West of England. After graduating with a 1st from the Bartlett School of Architecture, I worked in practice for several years before becoming a teacher of design and technology; specialising in electronic products in the UK, then working at an innovative International Baccalaureate college in Seville, Spain. Keen to explore digital approaches to sustainability in the built environment I gained an MSc in BIM in Design, Construction and Operations in 2021 and so embarked on my third career. I enjoy working with people of all ages and backgrounds, to explore their values and realise their agency, with the intent of building better shared understanding and outcomes for our common good. My values and aspirations thereby align with those of the ZERO community.
